NASA has released the first image from the Artemis mission showing the far side of the Moon. The photo was taken from the Orion spacecraft during Artemis II’s journey around the Moon, capturing a spectacular moment as the Earth disappears behind the Moon’s horizon.
The expedition marks the first crewed journey to the far side of the Moon in over 50 years. During the mission, the astronauts have also traveled farther from Earth than any human before—reaching a maximum distance of 406,771 kilometers—and breaking the previous record set by Apollo 13.
When Orion passed behind the Moon, contact with Earth was lost for about 40 minutes, according to the Swedish National Space Agency. Communication was resumed only when the spacecraft emerged on the other side, as the Earth became visible over the horizon once again.

The mission is also the first time the new Orion space capsule is being tested with a crew onboard. The four astronauts are spending a total of ten days in space, and the expedition is expected to conclude with a landing in the Pacific Ocean on Friday.
