COLUMN • How could a movement claiming to defend women’s rights end up allied with an ideology that systematically enslaves them? How could the struggle for women’s freedom be transformed into a political project where women’s suffering is downplayed, excused, or silenced – as long as the perpetrator is on the “right” side? The answer lies in the ideological shift within feminism, where opposition to the West, Israel, and “the white man” has taken precedence over everything else. In this worldview, actual women’s lives, safety, and freedom are no longer at the center, but rather loyalty to a greater ideological narrative – even when it means aligning with the most brutal, women-oppressing movements of our time.
It is one of our era’s most bizarre yet revealing alliances: how Western feminism in practice has ended up on the same side as Islamism – perhaps the most consistently misogynist ideology the world has seen. This is not rhetorical exaggeration but a political fact.

When Mass Murder Becomes “Resistance”
When Hamas, on October 7, 2023, carried out one of the worst massacres of Jews since the Holocaust – with slaughters of civilians, systematic rapes, kidnappings, and desecrations – American philosopher Judith Butler, one of modern feminism’s most influential figures, chose to publicly describe the attack as “armed resistance.” Not terrorism. Not antisemitism. But armed resistance.
We recognize this rhetoric from countless feminists and Islamism apologists in Sweden, including Greta Thunberg.

Butler’s position does not reflect an unfortunate choice of words in passing. It was a classification. A way to place the event within a moral and political framework where the perpetrator’s ideological affiliation outweighs the suffering of the victims.

Feminist icon Butler has long been clear that Hamas and Hezbollah should be seen as part of a :censored:6:cdd6bbaa89: anti-imperialist left. This very claim exposes just how completely the original promise of feminism – universal freedom for women – has been abandoned.

Because Hamas is not a social movement. It is an Islamist terrorist organization whose ideology is built on religious totalitarianism, female subjugation, and open Jew-hatred. That this can nonetheless pass as “resistance” within large parts of Western feminism says something deeply troubling about how the ideology has shifted.
The Shared Enemy Outweighs Women’s Lives
In this worldview, everything is subordinated to the struggle against the common enemy: the Western, secular, white man – often reduced to a symbol of colonialism, capitalism, and patriarchy. When violence is directed against him, or against what is defined as his civilization, the violence ceases to be a moral problem. It becomes understandable. Explainable. And not infrequently, legitimate.
When women in Iran are killed for not wearing the veil, Islamism’s uniform, Swedish feminists are silent and describe the hijab as a symbol of freedom. It’s distasteful and repugnant.
Jonas Andersson
This is why feminists march side by side with Islamists and Palestine demonstrators. Not despite Islamism’s misogyny, but because the direction of hatred aligns.

Women in Afghanistan are forbidden to work, study, move freely, or speak publicly. Girls are excluded from schools. Women are jailed for “inappropriate” behavior. This is not a side note – it is the core of Islamism. Yet this is often met with a relativizing silence from the same movements that, in the West, see incorrect pronouns or uneven gender ratios in boardrooms as existential crises.

The feminism that once claimed to fight for women’s liberation has today become an ideological apparatus where women are reduced to pawns in a larger geopolitical game. When the perpetrator is “anti-Western,” the abuse ceases to be decisive. Then the analysis becomes more important than the victim.

And that is why it is no longer enough to speak of feminism as if it were a force for good. It must be judged by its actual alliances, its actual language, and its actual priorities. When a leading feminist theorist calls an Islamist massacre of women and children armed resistance, something moral has broken down.
But ideologies do not exist as pure texts in a vacuum. They exist through their adherents. Through the choices made, the abuses excused, and the alliances that are formed in practice. An ideology is not what it claims to be, but what it permits, rewards, and defends.
Jonas Andersson
This is feminist ideology in practice. And ideology, when divorced from morality, always finds it easy to coexist with barbarism.
“That Wasn’t Real Feminism”
But this is also when the familiar retreat always comes. When reality becomes too brutal, it is said that the doctrine has been misunderstood. But to call this “wrong feminism” is simply a way to avoid responsibility.

Just as the apologists for communism always blamed Gulag and mass murder on misinterpretations, and Islamism’s defenders blame terror and gender apartheid on cultural misunderstandings, today’s feminist ideologues blame their own moral collapse on semantics.

But rapes do not become less real because they are committed in supposed resistance. Girls do not become freer because their prison happens to be outside the Western world. And evil does not cease to be evil because it is dressed in academic language.

This is not about the ideals of the women’s struggle, but about the real consequences of feminism. If an ideology repeatedly ends up on the same side as oppressors, terrorists, and theocrats – then it is no longer meaningful to discuss what it “really” ought to be.
Then it is what it is.
