With less than half a year left until the election, speculation is mounting about what the election results will look like and who will get the chance to form a government—another four years for Ulf Kristersson (M) with SD ministers, or Magdalena Andersson’s red-green opposition. In multicultural Malmö, the left is on top.

Ahead of the election, Sydsvenskan commissioned opinion polls for Malmö, and more than 1,000 residents responded regarding how they would vote in the municipal election.

In 2022, the Social Democrats received 30 percent of the votes in Malmö’s municipal election, and in the new survey, the party is significantly higher—38.5 percent. The Social Democrats are also the only party seeing growth.

The next largest are two parties with almost equal support—the Sweden Democrats and the Moderates with 14.8 and 14.7 percent, respectively. For SD, that’s about the same level as in 2022, but for the Moderates, it’s a loss of almost five percentage points.

The Left Party comes third with just under ten percent, a somewhat lower figure compared to the last election. The Christian Democrats, Centre Party, Liberals, and Green Party would not pass the national threshold, but since this poll concerns the municipal election in Malmö, the threshold is three percent—meaning only the Green Party also makes it over the bar.

Demographics have an impact

Magnus Olsson (SD) is disappointed with the numbers.

– Very disappointing reading. But it’s one poll among many. We shouldn’t dwell on it. We just need to roll up our sleeves and keep going, he tells Sydsvenskan.

He believes the reason the party is not seeing the same success in Malmö as nationally is due to the city’s demographics and the fact that it is distinctly left-leaning, with many young people and students.

Katrin Stjernfeldt Jammeh (S), by contrast, is very pleased.

– It’s always nice with an opinion poll showing strong support. We are out a lot, knocking on doors and have party branches across the city. I sense that we are receiving strong support when meeting many Malmö residents right now, she says.

The proportion of undecided voters is nearly ten percent.
