Tens of thousands of people took to the streets of Budapest on Sunday to show their support for Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, with just a few weeks left until the election. If Orbán wins, it will be his fifth consecutive electoral victory.

Supporters of Viktor Orbán’s party Fidesz – which has governed Hungary since 2010 – gathered in the streets of the capital ahead of the April 12 election.

Orbán has held a constitutional supermajority in parliament since 2014 and is also the longest-serving prime minister in the EU, underscoring his strong position and long-standing influence over the country’s politics.

However, ahead of the election, several opinion polls – spread by mainstream media – show that the race may be very close. Several institutes have even placed the opposition’s leader, Péter Magyar of the Tisza party, ahead of Viktor Orbán.

Other opinion polls, however, show more favorable figures for Orbán.

No Pride Flags and No EU for Ukraine

Sunday’s annual so-called peace march can be seen as a show of strength for Orbán. The streets were filled with a long procession of Hungarian flags as people marched to listen to a speech by Orbán.

At Kossuth Square, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán gave the main speech alongside other party members and the Christian Democratic partner party, KDNP.

Orbán emphasized his commitment to defending Hungary and safeguarding both important social and economic reforms, including reduced energy prices, pensions, family support systems, and the country’s tax system.

“We will not allow our national colors to be replaced by Ukrainian or rainbow flags,” he said, adding:

“We will defend mothers, protect our children, and ensure that what we have built over the past sixteen years is not taken from us.”

Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó, also from Fidesz, addressed the crowd with a promise that Ukraine will not get the fast track to EU membership that Brussels has opened up, despite the country not yet fulfilling the requirements.

“What’s happening in Ukraine is not our war. We will not send a single soldier or youth to the Ukrainian front. As long as Viktor Orbán is Prime Minister, Hungarian money will not go to Ukraine and Ukraine will never join the EU,” he promised.
