Novus’ latest opinion poll for TV4 News offers a cautious ray of hope for the Tidö parties. The Moderates make clear gains while the Social Democrats lose the most of all the parties. The result is a decreasing gap between the blocs.
The poll, conducted between August 3 and 16, shows that the Moderates have increased by 1.0 percentage points compared to July and stand at 18.3 percent. This makes the party the clear winner of the August poll.
At the same time, the Sweden Democrats fall by 1.3 percentage points to 19.1 percent. Thus, the SD retains its position as the largest party on the right, but the gap to the Moderates has shrunk significantly.
However, for the Tidö bloc as a whole, the most important change is that the gap to the opposition is narrowing. The Social Democrats account for the poll’s largest drop, falling by 1.7 percentage points to 30.1 percent – the party’s lowest level so far this parliamentary term.
KD at the Highest Level of the Parliamentary Term
The Christian Democrats also contribute to the right-wing upswing. The party rises to 6.3 percent, which is KD’s best result with Novus in this parliamentary term.
The Liberals, meanwhile, remain in a very difficult situation, getting only 1.9 percent – well below the parliamentary threshold.
On the opposition side, the Left Party also loses ground, while the Green Party and the Centre Party make slight gains.
These developments come after several politically intense weeks when, among other things, the debate about sentence reductions for repeated offenses, new information about Left Party members’ ties to Palestinians convicted of terrorism, and Richard Jomshof’s attention-grabbing statements have dominated the news flow.
Although the Tidö parties are still trailing the opposition by nearly seven percentage points, the August poll shows that the gap is not static. The Social Democrats’ lead is diminishing while both the Moderates and the Christian Democrats make gains.
This is also yet another recent opinion poll suggesting that the contest between the governing bloc and the red-green opposition has become closer over the summer.
None of the individual party changes in the Novus poll are statistically significant.
