Samnytt has previously reported on the story of the Somali fake doctor Nawaal Ali Salad, 28, daughter of Social Democrat profile Ahmed Ali Salad, who got a job thanks to a fake medical diploma. She has now been indicted for aggravated fraud by means of forgery and fraud of ordinary degree.

It was in January 2023 that Ali Salad applied for a job as a substitute junior doctor at Gilleberget Health Center in Sundsvall. She included her medical diploma from the Karolinska Institute, dated January 12, 2023.

A few weeks later, she got the job and began working at the health center under the supervision of a specialist physician.

The degree is fake

Ali Salad would then come to work as a junior doctor at the health center until June 2023. Then, a manager from the Stockholm Region got in touch and revealed that she had previously worked there under false pretenses.

The health center immediately decided to fire her and filed a police report. She had moreover already been reported to the police—by Region Stockholm—after having provided false information to them.

It was when she applied for a job within the Stockholm Region that she claimed, among other things, to have studied ten semesters at the medical program at Karolinska Institute, which was not true.

She had only completed nine university credits, corresponding to about six weeks of full-time studies, and was registered for study interruption in May 2018.

“Unfortunately, I don’t remember”

During the police interrogation with Ali Salad, she does not want to acknowledge the accusations. She consistently replies that it was so long ago and that she remembers nothing about it. She neither admits nor denies the crime.

Her father is a Somali S-profile

Nawaal Ali Salad is the daughter of Social Democrat profile Ahmed Ali Salad, who in 2014 managed to get elected to the Stockholm County Council after receiving over 1,600 personal votes in the “Yttre Västerort” district.

The family is Somali. Ahmed Ali Salad came to Sweden in the early 1990s, and a few years later his wife, seven years his junior, came as an 18-year-old. Nawaal was born in Sweden in 1997.

Daughter treated by fake doctor Nawaal

Hundreds of patients in Sundsvall were affected during the spring of 2023 by the fake doctor Nawaal Ali Salad. Among them was Sanna Brink, whose daughter was treated by her.

Sanna Brink visited Gilleberget Health Center in Sundsvall several times with her daughter. Towards the summer, a letter suddenly arrived in the Brink family’s mailbox.

– I had been away, and when I came home there was a letter addressed to my daughter and her legal guardian. It only said that my daughter had received treatment from this fake doctor, but I don’t know more than that, she told Samnytt.

However, she was not informed who the fake doctor was—just that “they have stopped with immediate effect”.

Police report leads to prosecution

Only now, three years after the scandal at the health center in Sundsvall, has prosecutor Katarina Becker decided to bring charges at Sundsvall District Court.

She demands that Nawaal Ali Salad be found guilty of aggravated fraud by means of forgery for her work at the health center, as well as fraud of ordinary degree after giving false information to the Stockholm Region.

Ali Salad was detained in absentia on March 24 this year and was difficult to reach for a long time; she was finally arrested on August 31 and later remanded in custody on September 3.
